Greatest Show Ever

Its a very complicated process getting ready to go into the studio and sing. We are going in for the next five days to try and finish the Blue Sky Riders record.(remember us?) Kenny flew in last night from Kansas City where he was doing God knows what. I flew in from Canada where I played a songwriter show at a casino. (Side notesaw Peter Noone and Hermans Hermits play the night before ushis guitar player, during a solo, jumped off the stage and broke his leg.BROKE HIS LEG. Greatest show ever.) Georgia flew in from Colorado where she was writing with disabled vets. She wins. We are heartless money grabbers and she is a saint. Welcome to my world.

This morning we are walking around the house making weird guttural noises in our throats (some sort of primitive warm up) and finding reasons to push back the start of the session. Do we have the lyrics printed out? Maybe we should print them on rose colored paper from Kinkos. Theres a Starbucks next door to it.anyone want anything? Shameless. Am I the only one here who has a work ethic? (He shouts from the couch where Biography is showing a Carroll OConner retrospective and I am NOT leaving till its over.)

Today we are trying to finish. That means listening to every song and saying things like Lets sing an ooh there. Lets have Gary sing that line instead of Kenny. (I get that a lot) Lets change that lyric. That is the one that gets my goat. As a songwriter I have always been supremely proud (as opposed to Four Tops proud) of obeying the old adage measure twice, cut once and dont go swimming for half an hour after you cut something. I truly believe that if we spend a lot of time finding the right words then they are carved in stone and you never change anything. Now Kenny and Georgia believe that songs are like sex. The process is never really overyou just keep working at it till you hate one another. I fully expect to be re-writing lines in the studio ten minutes before singing them. My fear with that is always that somewhere down the line everyone goes You know what? I think it was better the first way!! And then we drive all over the country buying the cds back from Target and Walmart and writing over the lyrics with a sharpie. Who has the time for that?

I know that there are people reading this who are, right at this moment saying to themselves This guy must be a nightmare to be in the studio with. Well its because I care more than they do. A huge amount more. These two are phoning this in long distance. Kenny actually sits in the studio and reads old reviews of his shows from 1986 and Georgia is leafing through Todays Bride and calling caterers.

I kid. I kid. I couldnt be in the studio with two more brilliant and generous people. This whole process is restoring my joy of creating music. I cant wait to hear what comes out of their mouths next because it teaches me something valuable each and every time. They make each track we do special and... and... and...

Okay they left the room. Its hard to be honest in these things when we all look over each others shoulders whenever we hear the keys clicking and measuring hotel rooms to make sure we all get the same size sitting area.

Okay kids, (and I think of you all AS my kids which gives me a creepy chill) its time to go. Not sure if we decided on Starbucks or Kinkos. Well get there eventually and when we do.ooowheee are you in for a thrill.

Concentrated

Kenny came to Nashville about two weeks ago and we had ourselves a concentrated Blue Sky Rider experience that damn near exhausted us. We had a simple, modest agenda. Kenny was going to sing on the CMAs, we were going to play the Bluebird, have a rehearsal for and then play a benefit at the Ryman, sing all the vocals for the five songs we recorded in California back in August, write two more songs, find a cure for at least two chronic diseases and one 24 hour disease, paint our house and neuter the dog.

A lot of people would look at that list and see pressure. We looked at it and saw opportunity. Opportunity to have minor strokes and/or drop completely dead from dehydration. Nevertheless we put on our big boy pants (Georgia looks fantastic in big boy pants, by the way), rolled up our sleeves (a lot of clothing referencessorry) and got to it.

The Ryman show was incredible. Despite having a great bill of performers they let us close the show. We sang four songs with the house band. We lucked out in that the band was all friends we play with often and they sounded fantastic. All of them played the bass, which I thought was a bold but odd choice for the Musical Director to make and it made the sound a little bottom heavy but I thought we pulled the songs off nonetheless. In this blog so far I have used the word Nonetheless and Nevertheless. I would appreciate extra credit.

The CMAs well Kenny remembered how the song goes so that was one of them. He looked great and the crowd seemed to embrace him as an old friend with the exception of several actual old friends that embraced him as if they had never met him before. Strange. We wanted to go to the show but tickets were $325,000 apiece so we watched the show from John Richs house. John has a stage in his house where a bed was set up and two Victoria Secret models were having a pillow fight in their underwear. Or as John likes to call itTuesday.

Three days before Kenny was scheduled to go home we realized that we had not written any new songs or sung all the vocals. We were hoping to do them in our studio here at the house because, much like Victoria Secret models, I also like to work in my underwear. As time was running out we decided to take a drastic step. We would find a studio and all sing the songs at the same time on three different mics watching each others lips just like at a gig. We werent sure it would work because I have trouble singing live with Kenny because if I get lost in those eyes it is ALL over. But I stared mostly at Georgia and I did all right. The vocals came out great although one song had me singing so high that I heard something pop in my pants. I thought it was my waist button but it turned out to be a small hernia turning into a large hernia.

Two days left and no new songs. We turned off the cell phones, brought the dog to the shelter, ordered in Italian and went to work. I am by nature a modest man dare I say I might indeed be the most modest man this universe has ever seen but we wrote two songs and they kick ass!!! The first one is called I Like Spaghetti and the second one is called They Forgot The Garlic Bread. Both uptempo. I know you are gonna love them.

I kid. We wrote two new songs that in one form or another will be up on the website soon so you can see what a little clock ticking did for our creative juices.

So that was our adventure. By the end we had bonded as a band even stronger than when we started. The next time we get together will surely be easier than this stretch was. We now have all the songs we need for the CD. What WILL we do with ourselves between now and our next trip to the studio. I may take up macramé. Macrame is French for heroin, isnt it?

Newly out is a great CD by Kristin Chenoweth, called Some Lessons Learned. Kristin is well known for her various roles on Broadway (Wicked, Youre A Good Man Charlie Brown) and her recurring characters on the TV shows West Wing (Annabeth Schott) and Glee (April Rhodes).

Kristin has now broken into the Country Music genre with a great new album, and Gary couldnt be prouder to have 3 great songs on it! Buy it, enjoy it, and buy it again! Buy some for the whole family! It makes a great Christmas gift for everyone you know!

From his first pop hit, Loves Been a Little Bit Hard On Me by Juice Newton (1982) to his induction into the Country Music Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 Gary Burr has been one of the most successful and honored songwriters in history.

For me the next song is never far from my mind. Every day I believe that THIS could be the day I hear or say the phrase or hum the melody that will be the best song Ive ever written!

Shawn Colvin harmonizing on "Younger": a beautiful song about dreams you may just be putting off till it's too late. A must have for fans, if I say so myself. And I do.
